I recently had an opportunity to visit a home similar to Dalnavert, Government House, on a trip to Regina.
The historic residence was of interest to me since like our museum, it was built in the 1890s. It was the home of the Lieutenant Governor General of the North-West Territories from 1891- 1905, and then Saskatchewan from 1905 – 1945. This residence is certainly bigger than Dalnavert, but there are many similarities in the design and artifacts.
One point of note was the Asian-inspired screen which was set up in the dining room, as well as the dragon figurine as seen on the right. So adorable! I also took note of the door hinges, the dinnerware, the wallpaper, carpets, and the huge stand-up safe that held the silver, dishes, and important papers of the Lieutenant Governor.
As with all museums, you have to visit yourself; it is just too difficult to describe this stunning 19th-century house. If you are ever driving through Regina, I encourage you to take a short detour and enjoy this marvel on the prairies. (Oh! And look for the monkey) Oh, and a big “Shout Out” to Chad Debert, the Manager of Government House for taking the time to meet with me and give me a tour!
