ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Sandra loves working with a material as culturally charged as human hair, as she continues to refine her techniques in the lost art of Victorian hairwork. For years she has been fascinated by artefacts made from organic matter, like body parts and food– things that should have decomposed or been disposed of but have somehow survived as tangible chunks of the past.

In addition to its power to memorialize and immortalize, hair holds a uniquely polarizing and conflicting influence. It is coveted and worshipped, but also reviled and revolting, depending on context. It evokes strong reactions of all types, which makes weaving and sculpting with it all the more interesting.

Sandra’s most recent hairwork project was a mask made from the hair of 8 individuals, the shape of which was inspired by a 16th century women’s riding mask.

Sandra got her first taste for immersive historical experiences a decade ago when she began working her dream job in costume at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site. She later served 3.5 years on the non-profit board Friends of Lower Fort Garry, getting back into period costume as often as possible. She is never happier than when exploring historic buildings.

In addition to her hairwork, Sandra works as an executive assistant and project coordinator by day, and as a stage manager for local independent theatre in her spare time. She lives with her partner and two cats in Winnipeg / Treaty 1 Territory.
