The Irish in Canada

  • Dalnavert Museum and Visitors' Centre 61 Carlton Street Winnipeg, MB, R3C 1N7 Canada (map)

By the time Queen Victoria ascended to the British throne in 1837, almost 60% of all immigrants entering Canada were Irish and by the time of her death in 1901 the Irish Canadian population stood at almost 1 million. Join us on this special tour of Dalnavert to learn about the fascinating story of the Irish in Canada. Using the spaces of this beautiful middle-class Victorian house, we’ll examine how generations of Irish immigrants fleeing persecution and poverty at home helped to forge the tools that would come to dismantle the British Empire in the twentieth century.
This tour will last approximately 45 minutes.
