Bram Stoker released his novel Dracula in 1897. This very Victorian story's literary bones will be excavated by Prof. Vanessa Warne who teaches Victorian Studies at the University of Manitoba. An excellent companion to the Dracula Unearthed! experience, or as a stand alone series. *You don't need to have read the book, it'll be interesting either way!*          Snacks, refreshments & bar available.

The Monster and the Typewriter - October 15th 1:30pm

Forget about the garlic. In Stoker’s novel, typewriters and gramophones prove more useful than traditional methods of Vampire eradication. We’ll explore how the skills of secretaries and thoroughly modern machines, such as portable typewriters, help the novel’s heroes get the job done.

Dracula’s Doctors - October 22nd 1:30pm

Experimenting with blood transfusions, operating psychiatric asylums, casually prescribing opium: the doctors in Dracula are almost as scary as the vampires. Dracula has a lot to say about the medical practices of the Victorian era and the limits and possibilities of medical innovation. We’ll explore how the doctors in Dracula manage the threat of vampirism with mixed results.

Burial Plots - October 29th 1:30pm

In this final lecture, we explore a dangerously overcrowded city cemetery and we learn about the Victorian-era effort to re-imagine cemeteries as safe, suburban green spaces. Come learn about both the dark history and new design of the Victorian cemetery. What can Dracula teach us about burial places—past and present day?
