About the Elizabeth Alloway Lecture Series

This series of nine public lectures, hosted by Dalnavert Museum, focused on the time
period, community, and interests of Elizabeth Alloway, and interests of Elizabeth Alloway. Elizabeth Alloway (1858-1926) was a community leader and philanthropist, with a special passion for the work of women and the well-being of children. She was independently wealthy and along with her husband Winnipeg Foundation founder William Forbes Alloway, they lived on Assiniboine Avenue, a short walk from Hugh John Macdonald and his family at Dalnavert. Upon her death, Elizabeth Alloway generously left the majority of her estate as a bequest to The Winnipeg Foundation.

Dr. Carla Manfredi - Robert Louis Stevenson: Writer & Photographer in the Pacific

Carla Manfredi  is an associate professor at The University of Winnipeg and has written a book on Robert Louis Stevenson entitled Pacific Impressions: Travel and Photography, 1888-1894,  it tackles photography’s role during Stevenson’s travels throughout the Pacific Island region.

Dr. Kyle McPhail - Gender and Sexuality in the Victorian era and Throughout the Ages

Kyle has a PhD in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester where their research focused on queer art histories and the representation of gender, sexuality and identity in mainstream art museums. They have a special interest in transgender representation and narratives.

Vivi Dabee - Canine Teeth: Rabies at the Species Border of Victorian Literature

Vivi Dabee is a lover of literature in its many forms and has an M.A in English from the University of Manitoba.  Her fascination with horse-drawn carriages, top hats, bustles, and etiquette led to an academic pursuit of Victorian culture, with a special interest  in critical animal studies. When she is not snuggled up with a good book, Vivi enjoys exploring all that Winnipeg has to offer with her family, friends and guide-dog companion.

Dr. Sabrina Mark and Dr. Vanessa Warne - Form and Function: A Cultural History of the Corset

This talk and corset demo will usher in the very first Elizabeth Alloway “Derry Days at Dalnavert” Tea on June 13th in person and outside at Dalnavert Museum. Listen to an illustrated talk exploring the controversial history of the corset, a celebrated but also much maligned garment. Join us to learn more about whalebone, waspish waists, and the foundations of what Victorians wore.

Kevin Klassen - Bram Stoker: The Man Inside The Monster

Kevin has been a professional theatre artist for over 25 years. Through his attempts to write a play about Bram Stoker, and his relationship with Henry Irving, he has become - if not an expert - an aficionado of both the novel Dracula and its author.

Sketching with Scissors: Nineteenth-Century Silhouette Portraiture and the Victorian Home with Dr. Vanessa Warne

This illustrated talk will include discussion on shadow puppetry, parlour décor, women's crafting practices, pre-photographic portraiture and how contemporary artists continue to engage this practice.

Dr. Warne is a volunteer and long-time supporter of Dalnavert and recently gave a talk and demonstration on Corsets with Dr. Sabrina Mark. She is a public speaker, and regular book reviewer for The Winnipeg Free Press.
