Dalnavert is currently hiring for three summer positions: Collections & Research Assistant (YCW), Programming & Communications Assistant (YCW), and Community Programs Assistant (Green Team). Please note, these positions are only possible because of external funding. Applicants who do not meet the funder’s criteria will not be considered. The Green Team position is pending funding and may not be available if funding does not come through.

Collections & Research Assistant (YCW)
$17/hour
30 hours/week
Standard work week: Wednesday-Sunday
Friends of Dalnavert Museum are seeking a Collections and Research Assistant to help us in collections management and conservation of our collection, as well as with research to help us make the history of Dalnavert, Winnipeg, and the Victorian era accessible to our community. They will assist Dalnavert Museum’s Collections Registrar in the care and preservation of the Museum’s extensive collection including accesioning and cataloguing artifacts, preventative conservation, artifact rotation and digitization. They will also lead the research and development of a walking tour to commemorate the 130th anniversary of Dalnavert. Some daily operational duties will be included such as the delivery of guest services at the reception desk, house tours, delivering and supporting programs and events, and supporting our volunteers.
Friends of Dalnavert Museum is the registered charity that owns and operates Dalnavert Museum and Visitors’ Centre, located at 61 Carlton St. in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dalnavert is the restored 1895 home of Sir Hugh John Macdonald, son of Sir John A. Macdonald, and his family. Our mission is to preserve and maintain the museum's buildings, grounds, and collection; to present engaging programs and exhibits that interpret the history of the house and Winnipeg's rich heritage for visitors; and to develop partnerships and programming that make Dalnavert a cultural centre for city residents.
The Collections and Research Assistant will undertake the following tasks:
Research and write an engaging walking tour to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the historic house that includes the history of the house, its inhabitants, and the history of the neighbourhood.
Conduct research to support other signature museum programming
Work with the Collections Registrar to create a plan for organizing Collections documentation
Assist the Collections Registrar with accessioning artifacts and processing donations
Check, record, and analyze daily/monthly temperature and humidity readings
Implement our Integrated Pest Management program
Assist in care of heritage rooms and artifacts on a regular basis
Provide programming assistance, as required
Deliver interpretive tours of the national historic site and the surrounding area to guests, as required
Assist with front line visitor services in conjunction with volunteers, as required
Candidates interested in this position should demonstrate the following education, experience and skills:
Upper-level University or College education in any of the following areas is preferred: Collections Management, Museum Studies, Humanities (History, Canadian Studies, Political Science, Anthropology, Art History, and Fine Arts)
Demonstrated interest in Canadian historical perspectives is an asset: e.g., social and political history, built heritage, material culture, interpretation and story-telling, immigration, reconciliation
Experience with conducting historical research and conveying that research to the public. Experience developing tours is an asset.
Experience working with artifacts and digital photography
Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, and the Adobe Creative Suite
Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of French or an additional language is an asset
Physical dexterity to handle collection artifacts by hand
Availability to work occasional evenings required
Physical demands or this position include sitting at a desk, using a computer, climbing stairs, and standing for an hour or more at a time

Programming & Communications Assistant (YCW)

Dalnavert Museum is seeking a Museum Programming and Communications Assistant for the summer period. This is an exciting opportunity for aspiring museum professionals seeking to gain practical experience in a busy history museum as well as those interested in museum interpretation and communications, program development and delivery, and wider museum operations. The successful candidate will work closely with our Museum Services Manager and Executive Director to assist in the creation and implementation of interpretive programming, implement the museum's communications strategies, deliver exceptional visitor experiences via tours, and contribute to Dalnavert's mission to promote and protect this National Historic site in critically engaging and challenging ways. The Museum Communications and Programming Assistant will also play a key role in planning and delivery of the annual Dalnavert Days festival.

The primary tasks to be undertaken by the Museum Programming and Communications Assistant are as follows:
Plan and execute a two day festival (Dalnavert Days) to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the historic house, including a market, musical acts, family activities and tours, and refreshments.
Work with the museum team to deliver summer programs, including 130th anniversary programs, as well as contributing to the design and development of future programs.
Deliver exceptional frontline visitor services, including providing tours and other recurring programs, processing admissions and other sales, and responding to visitor enquiries as needed.
Work with the museum team to deliver our Communications Plan including coordination and creation of newsletters, website and social media content, and the creation of promotional marketing materials as required; contribute to communication planning meetings as required.
Contribute to daily museum operations including assisting with volunteer support, setting event spaces, ensuring health and safety procedures are being followed, and other standard museum operation duties as required.
Candidates interested in this position should demonstrate the following education, experience and/or skills:
Upper-level University or College education in any of the following areas is preferred: Museum Studies, Education, Humanities (History, Canadian Studies, Anthropology, Art History, and Fine Arts), Communication Arts, Marketing, Public Relations, Information Technology, , or demonstrable skills and experience in a relevant professional sphere.

Experience with popular social media platforms (especially Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok) in a professional sphere a requirement (can including relevant volunteer experience) and can be demonstrated with sample work; experience with social media as a brand tool an asset.
Demonstrated interest in Canadian historical perspectives, e.g. social and political history, built heritage, material culture, interpretation and story-telling.
Computer proficiency, including standard tools such as MS Office.
Experience working with digital photography is an asset.
Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential, French and/or additional language skills (including ASL and Indigenous languages) an asset.

Community Programs Assistant (Green Team)
$15.80/hour
30 hours/week
Standard work week: Wednesday-Sunday
Please note: As of March 27, 2025, funding for this position has yet to be confirmed. This position will not be filled in the absence of funding.
The Community Programs Assistant will be responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, and execution of community-focused programs and events. These events and programs include but aren't limited to: on-going tours of Dalnavert Museum; walking tours of the Broadway Neighborhood surrounding Dalnavert Museum; Dementia friendly tours; Pride month programs; family oriented Second Saturday programming; family oriented tea parties; and Dalnavert Days which is a two day free community festival.
The Green Team employee will:
assist in planning and organization of programs/events
coordinate logistics, set-up and tear-down event spaces, and prepare supplies
help manage bookings
assist with promotion through social media, flyers, etc.
provide support during events such as crowd management, registration, delivering tours and leading activities
work alongside volunteers
assist in evaluation of programs through recording attendance, surveys, visitor feedback, etc.
Candidates interested in this position should demonstrate the following education, experience and/or skills:
Experience in delivering museum or other public programming
Experience in project management for events or other large scale projects
Experience in use of common design tools, multimedia, and related equipment/software strongly desired

not have been employed by the Dalnavert on a full-time basis (more than 24 hours per week) for a period of three or more months just prior to the Green Team employment period
