Tussie Mussie 5.jpg

The flowers that Weena gives to the time traveler are a little piece of physical evidence from the fantastical adventures he has taken. This tussie mussie would have been filled with a small bouquet of flowers to give off a pleasant aroma for the carrier. The mirror would have given the carrier the ability to look backwards as well - though only through space, not time.

Tussie mussie, c. late 19th-early 20th century.

Cow plate 4.jpg

Beef (and meat more widely) was highly valued in the Victorian diet. The reality of the rapid industrialization of meat production in this time is being pushed aside in this idyllic, agricultural image on a platter made specifically for serving a family-sized roast.

Cow platter, c. 1875, based on a painting by T. Boublec.

Medicine 3.jpg

“Mad science” wasn’t just found in Victorian literature, it was also found in the everyday family’s medicine cabinet! Experimental ingredients in some of these treatments included arsenic, strychnine, and chloroform.

Camera 2.jpg

Invention, experimentation, and new technologies were everywhere in the Victorian era, and this influenced the budding literary genre of science-fiction. Machines for image reproduction really took off, and still-image technologies like film cameras were pushed even further into the realm of moving images with cinematographs.

clock 1.1.jpg

Time is a major theme in H.G. Wells’ classic story - and was a cultural obsession for the Victorians. As this clock’s timekeeping mechanism is no longer running, it acts as its own little time machine, frozen at 3:00.

Neoclassical style clock, c.1845-1850, faux marble with brass, ebonized wood.
